5 Keys to Building the Right Team for Your Startup

Bad hires are costly and for startups they can be fatal. It, for sure, seems dramatic but is as true as it is dramatic. But there is a difference between a stellar hire and a toxic one. A toxic hire will give you lack of skill, inefficiency, bad habits and low morale and on the other hand, a stellar hire will give you a star employee that gives you everything you need, fills in the gaps, does everything before it is told to be done and what not. This can be a deciding factor on how long does it go? A stellar team might be elusive but it ain’t. It’s hard to get one but now impossible. There are the five essential tips to find the right team for your startup:
1. Build on the foundation
A strong foundation lays out the path to a strong company. A wobbly foundation will give you a shaky company but strong foundation will give you a stable company. You should be clear on the positions on which you are getting new hires. There needs to be a proper chain to ensure that everything is looked over properly. Assess what you need help with and which kinds of people best fit in for the job. The entrepreneurs can look beyond the full time employees and towards contractors.
2. Find some rockstars
You always need some amazing superstars to rock the stage be it music, games or leadership. But what do you look for in a rockstar? The person needs adaptability. They should have multiple talents and must fit in the situation. You should be open to people who don’t want to limit their experiences on the field. The person must be able and willing to learn at every stage of his job.
3. Prioritize passion and potential
Ordinary companies don’t hire on passion but only on core knowledge. There are times when a person’s passion comes in handy for a company and startups need people with varied knowledge and creativity who can help it grow. You as a small businessman must employ people who truly believe in the company and the idea and not the one who views you as a stepping stone in his career.
4. Don’t forget experience
While it’s great to hire people based on their passions and potential, the right team must be a mix of experience and passion to work. You must include some people who have experience in your field. Having a member who knows his role better is an important person for the team.
5. Check your compatibility
Check the values, goals, skills and personalities of the people you are hiring. It can be compared to marriage since you’ll be spending a lot of time together. You should be compatible with the person you are hiring. Compatibility is the key.
